Even though quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is recovering from a broken leg, the 49ers will not replace San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy until the 2022 postseason.
But Garoppolo could still be an option to back up Purdine if the 49ers advance to Super Bowl LVI.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the same thing last week. But Garoppolo reiterated the point on Monday that he is unlikely to be available for the NFC Championship Game against the Eagles. The quarterback was back on the field late last week for an easy week.
“An X-ray to see how things are going,” Shanahan said, via Cami Inman of the Bay Area News Group. “I’d be very surprised if he did.” He was there this weekHe said.
Garoppolo has been out since suffering a foot injury against the Dolphins in Week 13. He has completed 67.2 percent for 2,437 yards with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions.
Purdy put up very strong numbers in 2022, going 5-0 as a starter. He completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,374 yards with 13 touchdowns and four INTs.
